What Is Website Copy? (And Why It’s the Secret Weapon Your Interior Design Business Needs)

A while back, a prospective client stopped me mid-call and asked, “Wait, what exactly is website copy?”

Honestly, I was so glad she asked.

Because as much as we hear terms like “web copy” or “site copy” on industry podcasts, in design panels, and marketing conversations, it’s not something most interior designers actually feel confident defining. And that’s not your fault.

These terms get tossed around like you should just know what they mean. But the truth is, most of my interior design clients come to me not really knowing what “website copy” actually includes, let alone why it matters so much for helping them get design clients.

So let’s clear all of that up.

Website copy is simply the text on your interior design website.

That’s it. All the words you see (and some you don’t even notice) when you visit any website is ‘copy’:

  • Headlines and subheadings

  • Intro paragraphs and service descriptions

  • Call-to-action buttons like “Get in Touch” or “Explore the Portfolio”

  • Your About page, Contact page, even your footer text

  • Taglines, testimonials, and sometimes even the words inside your logo

When I write website copy for my clients, I take responsibility for every word a visitor reads on their site and for the experience those words give them. That includes refining the flow of the homepage, tightening up the Services page, selecting and editing testimonials, writing image captions, and crafting calls to action that actually convert.

I even create killer taglines and occasionally help rename their business. Because when you’re clarifying your brand message, sometimes the entire foundation needs an upgrade.

But here’s the part most designers don’t realize:

Your website copy is not just text. It’s your positioning.

It’s how you communicate who you are, what you do, and why you’re the one your prospective clients have been looking for. It’s what turns a casual browser into a confident inquiry. It’s what makes the difference between attracting high-end clients or getting ghosted by the ones who say they love your work but never follow through.

And when that copy is written strategically (i.e. when it reflects your voice, speaks to your dream clients, and supports the kind of business you’re building) it becomes one of the most powerful marketing tools in your entire business.

Most designers come to me saying...

  • “I know my work is good, but I don’t know how to talk about it.”

  • “I’ve outgrown my current site. It doesn’t reflect where I’m headed anymore.”

  • “I want to attract better clients, but my messaging just isn’t landing.”

That’s where great website copy comes in.

And that’s why I don’t just write pretty words. I help designers like you clarify your message, position your business for growth, and create a site that actually gets you clients.

So yes, website copy is just the text on your website.
But when it’s done right, it’s also the bridge between where your business is now and where you want it to go.
